WHEN you wish to come upon a star musical director, you could not wish for a better one than York Musical Theatre Company's Paul Laidlaw.

He not only presents full-scale musicals, but also nurtures the company ranks with his revue shows, where the principal workload can be spread far wider and more voices come to the fore.

This time Laidlaw focuses on the ever-changing film music from the magical world of Disney, from The Mickey Mouse Club 90 years ago to Frozen and Tangled, dividing the songs into 11 themed sections, spread over Acts One and Two, with such titles as Once Upon A Time, Dreams Come True, It's A Jolly Holiday, A New Fantastic Point Of View, Happy Happenstances and True Friendship Will Never Die.

An erudite Laidlaw introduction to each half would have been welcome, as would a credits list of who sang which song, rather than only a cast list, in the programme. Anyway, minor gripes aside, this is a suitably enchanting, fast-moving show performed by a cast of 28; the heavily outnumbered seven men in white shirts and black trousers, the 21 women split between pink and cream rose colours, against a backdrop of a forest glade with the familiar Disney castle behind.

I particularly enjoyed Jonny Holbek's bouncing Tigger; Eleanor Leaper and Matt Ainsworth's A Whole New World; Richard Bainbridge's humorous Hi Diddly Dee; Sarah Pollard's Les Poissons; Lydia Potter's Just Around The Riverbend and Anna Mitchelson's Colors Of The Wind.

Alexa Chaplin's Someday, Natalia Leaper's True Love Kiss, Chris Gibson's Bare Necessities and Emma Louise Lane's Reflection go down well too and Nikki Ainscough rises admirably to the challenge of Frozen's Let It Go.

Praise too to pianist Laidlaw' band with Lisa Featherston on bass and Edwin Sparrow on drums, and as ever his vocal arrangements and orchestrations are of the highest order.
