PART of Selby town centre was cordoned off by police for several hours as they dealt with a man who intended to harm himself.

North Yorkshire Police were called to Grant Walk in the town at about 4.30pm on Thursday, October 4, to reports of a man who was sat on a roof in the area.

A spokeswoman said: "Police negotiators engaged with the man who showed signs of intending to harm himself. They enabled the incident to be brought to a safe conclusion ensuring that nobody was injured."

The 33-year old man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage at 9.50pm, and remained in custody for questioning on Friday morning.
