WE hoped, when we set Press Camera Club members the challenge of taking photographs on the theme #mobilephone, that they’d think outside the box.

As usual, they didn’t disappoint. Yes, there have been plenty of excellent photographs taken using a mobile phone. But there are also some cracking images in which the phone is the subject of the picture, rather than the medium by which it was taken.

This made the challenge of picking the winners all the harder. But the seven photographs on these pages today are all worthy winners.

The clarity and focus of Joseph Peggs’ ‘Beetling along’ is extraordinary, given that it was taken on a phone. Sandra Michelle Hillyer’s Saltburn Pier stands out for the light and the quality of composition; and it is the texture of the conker in Emma Precious’ All conkering that forced us to pick it. Ann Pitcher’s Queen Victoria phoning home, meanwhile, makes the shortlist simply because it’s so quirky.

The runners up are Stephen Hillyer, for his portrait of a tourist in York intent on her phone; and Jess Clark’s delightful baby squirrel. But this month’s winner, for its sheer ingenuity and compositional structure, is Kieran Delaney.

Congratulations, Kieran. You win £50 and a canvas print of your picture.

This month’s competition, meanwhile, is #autumncolours.

Get snapping, everyone...
