ORGANISATIONS across York have been flying the suffrage flag to celebrate the centenary of the first women winning the right to vote.
Thedistinctive purple, white and green flag arrived in the city during a 44-week relay tour of government departments and agencies across Britain.
It first visited the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in Foss House before travelling to the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) at Sand Hutton, the National Railway Museum and Department for Work and Pensions.
To mark the occasion, APHA organised a day of celebration, honouring how far women’s rights have advanced, particularly in science.
Historian of science Dr Patricia Fara explored the role of female scientists during the First World War and how this contributed to changes following the Armistice.
