SPACED, a season of sci-fi films at City Screen, will be shown in the Vintage Sundays slot from this weekend, taking a journey to outer space in anticipation of Damien Chazelle's new autumn movie First Man.

Built around the story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the Space Race years from 1961 to 1969, First Man will be released on October 12 with Ryan Gosling in the lead role of Armstrong.

First up in the Spaced season will be Sunday's 12 noon screening of Philip Kaufman's 1983 epic The Right Stuff (15), adapted from Tom Wolfe's book about Navy, Marine and Air Force test pilots and those selected to be astronauts for Project Mercury, the first manned spaceflight by the United States.

This will be followed by The Moon (15) and A Trip To The Moon on October 7; Alien (15), October 14, 8pm; Solaris (12A), October 21; Apollo 13 (PG), October 28, and 2001: A Space Odyssey (U), November 4. All start at 12 noon unless otherwise stated.

Dave Taylor, marketing manager at City Screen, says: "From Georges Méliès’ early silent movie A Trip To The Moon to Damien Chazelle’s First Man, filmmakers have been obsessed with taking audiences to the outer reaches of the universe. The Spaced season celebrates the cinematic exploration of the unknown, and further good news is that Vintage Sundays tickets are priced at £8 or only £5 for members."

Tickets are on sale on 0871 902 5747, in person at the Coney Street box office or at picturehouses.com/york.
