OH what a day Sunday turned out to be for York City Knights: league champions crowning a superb season of rugby league played at Bootham Crescent and at away grounds into the bargain.

Every player, coach and member of staff has had a major part to play and the supporters have shown their appreciation in growing numbers.

I, along with my wife and grandson, went home as part of a very happy group eagerly awaiting what was to be said on Yorkshire television only to be astounded at Harry Gration’s remark: “Two years ago they were a bit of a joke club!”

The Knights have never been a “bit of a joke club”, they have always played very good entertaining rugby, even when they had to tour around looking for somewhere to play because of adverse circumstances.

I have been a supporter of the rugby club in York for about 70 years and never have they been “a bit of a joke”.

I don’t ever remember fans booing them off the pitch or shouting abuse.

So Mr Gration, the club, supporters, but most of all the players, deserve an apology.

York deserved to win League One crown

Hearty congratulations to the Knights who deservedly won the title and automatic promotion, because they proved to be a better team than my Bradford side.

They have done our city proud, and are a shining example of our wonderful game that we support. Here’s hoping that my Odsal Steam Pigs will join them next season and reproduce the two exciting matches that we saw this year. Sport doesn’t come any better than these two spectacular occasions.
