PEOPLE are being warned not to fall for a fake TV licence scam.

Action Fraud, the national fraud and cyber crime reporting centre, says there has been a sharp rise in reports of emails claiming to offer a TV licence refund.

The scam email says the refund cannot be paid because of "invalid account details" and asks people to click on links that lead to websites designed to steal personal and financial details, according to Action Fraud.

A spokesman warned people never to click on links in unexpected emails or texts and to be cautious of unsolicited requests for personal or financial information.
