Joey Dosik, Inside Voice (Secretly Canadian) ****
SOMETIME member of jazz band Vulfpeck, Joey Dosik follows his rather wonderful Game Changer solo set with another slice of classy, sophisticated soul. Stylistically, Dosik’s music could be described as "yacht rock" as it glides graciously into a hybrid of sweet Seventies' soul as demonstrated by Michael McDonald and Christopher Cross and contemporary boudoir sounds perfected by John Legend and Babyface. Primarily a pianist, Dosik’s arrangements are complex, lush and to the jazz ear truly beautiful. Destined for heavy airplay on the cooler jazz radio stations, the ballads Inside Voice, Take Mine and Don’t Want It to Be Over, featuring a vocal guest performance from Coco O, provide sumptuous easy listening. A hidden gem, Down The Middle (VHS Interlude) is a 61-second instrumental featuring, way in the background, a group of Californian lads playing basketball. You suspect Dosik’s music will reach a far larger audience via the medium of movie soundtracks and high-end television orchestrations. Inside Voice is certainly worth investigating.
