A TEAM of North Yorkshire firefighters and police officers are taking part in a sponsored challenge to raise money for charity.

Sergeant Paul Cording from North Yorkshire Police's roads policing team is among the group taking part in the 24.5 mile Yorkshire Three Peaks walk, to raise money for the Candlelighters trust.

The walk, on Sunday, will see participants hike Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in one day, to raise money for the charity to help five-year-old William Bramley.

William is a relative of a firefighter at Skipton, and was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic leukaemia in December. He is currently in remission, and his the team said he has "remained incredibly brave and strong throughout the illness".

Martyn Hughes, a spokesman for the team, said: "The same must be said of his Mum and Dad, Jo and Chris and sister Millie. They have asked that all proceeds we hope to raise go directly to the amazing charity which has looked after all four of them and so many others amazingly throughout the illness.

"We appreciate there are so many charities collecting on a daily basis yet If you could help us with even the smallest of donations or just by spreading the word, we would both be extremely grateful and we would also all be helping to support each beautiful child and their families that unfortunately has to pass through the life-changing doors at Candlelighters."

The latest challenge follows a team from Skipton fire station who hiked to the summit of Ben Nevis in April for the same charity, and will see police and firefighters join forces for the event.

The team set a target of £100, but have already raised more than three times that amount, and are now aiming for £500.
