A CYCLING event is taking place next week to mark one year until the World Championships come to Bradford.

Women's cycling club Queensbury Queens is holding the event for all people from across the district, which will take place at Bradford Capital of Cycling in Hall Ings on Saturday, September 29.

There will be a range of cycling-themed activities taking place at the cycling hub, including Scalextric bike racing, a design your own jersey competition and more.

It will coincide with the Elite Women's Race at the UCI Road World Championships, which this year is taking place in Innsbruck, Austria, and next year will be coming to Yorkshire, with Bradford named as one of the race locations for the event.

The Elite Women's Race from Innsbruck will be screened live at Capital of Cycling throughout the event, which will run from 2.30pm to 5pm.

Zoe Towers, chair of Queensbury Queens Cycling Club says, “We are really excited as a local cycling club that the UCI World Championships 2019 are going to be held not only in Yorkshire, but that our city Bradford is a host town.

"We can’t wait for the pros to be racing on the same roads that our club cycles out on each week. We want to make the most of this occasion by making the celebrations last the whole year.

"This starts with our launch event at Bradford Capital of Cycling. Our aim is to encourage everyone to get involved with lots of fun.

"We are hoping that by hosting a family event like this it will encourage lots more women to find out more about the UCI World Championships, therefore building the interest and knowledge for next years event when it’s in our city.”

Elise Fitzgerald, from Queensbury Queens, added: “It’s about the people of Bradford coming together for a community event.

"Look what we did for the Tour de Yorkshire, we’d love to give this spectator support to the UCI World Road Championships too.”
