CITY OF YORK housing officers are claiming they are on track to provide more than 900 beds and homes for older people in care by 2020.

They also say the project will be funded with a £100 million investment in a report to be considered by the city council’s executive next week.

It says the project originally aimed to provide places for 533 older people in care.

Now the project aims to provide 561 residential and nursing care beds and 403 homes in extra care schemes by 2020, an increase of more than 40 per cent.

The report says 242 of the places are already being used and 215 more are already under construction.

The number of people aged 75 or more living in York is expected to increase by 50 per cent to 26,000 by 2030.

The council hopes to start a 33-home extension to the Marjorie Waite Court extra care scheme and an 80-bed Burnholme Care Home next month.
