A YORK cafe and restaurant has been included in a prestigious guide to the best eateries around the country.

Partisan, on Micklegate, is among the new entries to the 2019 edition of the Good Food Guide.

The business opened on Micklegate in October 2016 and serves breakfast, brunch, lunch and afternoon tea every day of the week. It also opens on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings for casual dining.

Describing Partisan, the Guide says: “This distinctive arrival on blossoming Micklegate is principally a daytime café with a rustic ambience.

“In the evenings (Thursday to Saturday) chef James Gilroy puts together a more ambitious menu of globally inspired dishes.

“Desserts come from a tempting display of cakes made in-house.

“The brains behind this imaginative enterprise are owners Hugo Hildyard and Florencia Clifford, who cook, as they say, ‘with attention, compassion and awareness’. We’re inclined to agree.”

Florencia said: “It is fantastic to be added to the Guide. It is good for the business to be included.”

Other York eateries which feature in the 2019 Guide include The Rattle Owl and Skosh, both on Micklegate; The Star Inn the City, on Museum Street; Mannion & Co, on Blake Street; Melton’s, on Scarcroft Road; The Chopping Block, formerly The Bistro above Walmgate Ale House, on Walmgate; Le Cochon Aveugle, also on Walmgate, and The Park, at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, on St Peter’s Grove.

In addition, a number of businesses near York are featured in the latest Guide, including The Greenhouse Tearoom, Vertigrow, off the A64, near Stockton on the Forest, The Dawnay Arms, at Newton-on-Ouse, and Rascills at Raskelf.

The Good Food Guide has reviewed the best restaurants, pubs and cafés across the UK since 1951. Each year, the guide is completely rewritten and compiled from scratch. All reviews are based on the huge volume of feedback from readers of the guide and this, together with anonymous expert inspections, ensures that every entry is assessed afresh.
