BEAUTIFUL pictures of York are reaching a wider audience than ever before thanks to social media.
Images of the city are not only being shared on Instagram and seen by people from around the world but they are encouraging more people to visit.
Visit York - which markets York as a world-class tourist destination - uses the social media platform to showcase the city and has some of Instagram's most liked and shared images of York.
Paul Whiting, head of Visit York, said: "It is not hard to see why York is so popular on Instagram, a channel that is devoted to sharing stunning photographs and sparking conversations. It gives us all the opportunity to showcase just how beautiful the city is to people all over the world, inspiring wanderlust in their followers. From images of York Minster bathed in sunlight to a busy afternoon on Stonegate and, of course a moonlit shot of The Shambles these images are liked and shared thousands of times, with the some of the hashtags relating to York including millions of images.
"This allows us to extend our marketing reach, sharing the beauty of our historic city to a new and engaged audience.
