THE Red Lion country inn in Boroughbridge Road, Upper Poppleton, near York, presents Dave Robinson, of Dave Berry & The Cruisers, in concert on September 28 in his Past Masters show.

“We have events all the time but sometimes something a little special crops up, and like the Anita Harris gigs with Freddie “Parrot Face” Davies we had in July, this is one of those times: a two-course meal and a show for a maximum of 50 people,” says landlord Mark Lee.

“Dave Robinson, a personal friend of 25 years, has a band called Past Masters. They’re all professional musicians who have all walked the walk; amazingly, the bass player is Alan Jones, who was the bassist for The Shadows from 1977 to 1990, as well as being bassist for Tom Jones and Cliff Richard.

“He also backed many others, including Elvis Presley. In fact Elvis wanted to keep Alan but Tom Jones would not let him out of his contract.”

Next Friday’s sold-out 7.30pm event has the title Buddy Holly Meets The Shadows, on account of also featuring Andrew Morley who “plays, lives and breathes Buddy Holly”, even starring as Buddy in the West End show Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story. So much so that Past Masters presented Morley in Buddy Holly & His Buddies at Sheffield City Hall on September 5 to mark the 60th anniversary of Holly’s only visit to Sheffield in March 1958.
