A DECISION on whether trial use of CCTV in a York bus lane should be permanent will be made by the public.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have been used as part of an experimental Traffic Regulation Order (TRO), in the bus lane at Low Poppleton Lane since April this year.

The cameras were introduced as an enforcement alternative to the rising bollard system, and issue drivers who breach the restrictions with penalty charge notices.

City of York Council said the TRO was set up to help increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and to ensure the local bus timetable ran correctly, but the pilot period was approaching a close.

A decision can now be taken on whether to make the TRO permanent or whether to make any changes to the arrangements, and local residents, motorists and businesses have been encouraged to have their say.

The decision will be made at a public decision session by the council's Executive member for transport and

planning on October 25, and all comments or objections must be logged by Friday, October 12.
