THE Treasurer’s House in York has won gold for the fifth consecutive year in the 2018 Yorkshire in Bloom awards.

The National Trust, which runs the historic property in the shadow of York Minster, said its garden had ‘enduring appeal’ and this had not escaped the attention of judges at an awards ceremony held at York racecourse.

“An oasis of calm found in the heart of the city, this most beguiling of gardens continues to charm its visitors, offering a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city’s shops and attractions,” said a spokeswoman.

“From here you can watch the world go by or settle into one of its deliciously shady corners to soak up the garden’s elegant combination of fine lawns, subtle planting and statues. It can be enjoyed as part of a visit to the National Trust house, it’s free to enjoy the garden so perfect to drop into when you’re in York, or even a lunchtime escape from the office.”

She said maintaining the garden would not be possible without the continued support of a dedicated team of volunteers alongside gardener Steve Hodges.

Steve said “People visit from near and far and tell us how much they love the garden and so it’s fantastic to continue to match judges expectations and have our efforts recognised with a fifth consecutive gold award.

“We’re very proud of this little corner of York and we hope to continue this golden run for many more years.”

Meanwhile, Malton in Bloom is also celebrating success in the wards, with the group of volunteers awarded a gold certificate and declared category winner in the class for small towns.

It also picked up a discretionary award for its commercial enterprise in working in partnership with the local business community.
