SKA, reggae and rocksteady evergreens Toots & The Maytals will return to Leeds this autumn for the first time since their Millennium Square double bill with The Specials in May 2017.

Led by Frederick "Toots" Hibbert, The Maytals will play Leeds O2 Academy on October 13 as part of a newly extended 13-date tour, with tickets on sale at ticketmaster.co.uk.

Toots was born in May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica, in 1942, the youngest of seven children, and grew up singing gospel music in a church choir before he moved to Kingston in the late 1950s.

After forming in 1961, The Maytals crafted such pioneering such as Do The Reggay, widely acknowledged as the first song ever to feature the word "reggae", Pressure Drop, 54-46 (That's My Number), Sweet And Dandy, Monkey Man, Funky Kingston and Reggae Got Soul.

Across six decades, Toots’ raw, gospel-infused vocals and life-affirming Jamaican music has influenced countless artists, from The Specials and The Clash to Amy Winehouse, and he has toured with The Rolling Stones, Sheryl Crow and Los Lonely Boys.

A five-time Grammy nominee, Toots and his band won the 2005 Grammy Award for Best Reggae album with True Love: a set of re-recorded hits made with Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, No Doubt, Ben Harper, The Roots and Shaggy.

Ahead of his autumn travels to Britain, 75-year-old Toots says: "The UK is a home from home for Toots and The Maytals, so we’re looking forward to seeing all our friends during our tour. To bring joy with my music is my greatest aspiration. We give 100 per cent every night and our fans give us that energy right back every time."
