THERE’S a watery theme to this selection of photos from The Press Camera Club.
Well, what did you expect? These are, after all, the winners of last month’s competition – theme #water.
The brief was to interpret the theme in whatever way camera club members wanted. They didn’t disappoint.
There were some lovely, carefully-crafted landscapes (or should that be waterscapes?) such as those on these pages by Linda Ullathorne and Robin Banks. There was Barney Sharratt’s extraordinary study of the Atlas Fountain at Castle Howard, in which the figure of Atlas seems to be weighed down by the weight not just of the world but also of the water upon his shoulders.
Then there were the quirky entries – Emma Shipley’s dog flying free above a wet beach at Robin Hood’s Bay, and Sue Gabbatiss’s toddler playing in the water from a fountain.
The winner, though, just had to be Philip Chalk’s still waters. “It’s an almost perfect composition,” said Press photographer Frank Dwyer. “You’ve got that perfectly angled reflection of the boat; the stillness of the water; the hush in the air that comes from the mist. It’s beautiful.”
So it is. Well done Philip: You win £50 and a big canvas print of your picture.
