POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a moped rider died in a crash on the A59 Boroughbridge Road in York this morning.
Officers were called to the scene near the junction with Plantation Drive at about 5.30am.
A passing fire crew had stopped to help the rider, a 48-year-old man from York who had been riding a silver Piaggio moped travelling towards the ring road, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The road was closed for five hours while officers from the Roads Policing Group and Forensic Collision Investigation Unit examined the scene.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or who saw the moped before the incident to call 101 quoting reference number 12180168057.
