A LOCAL parish council is to join a national tribute to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Rawcliffe Parish Council has erected a beacon near Rawcliffe Pavilion, which will be lit on November 11 as part of the Battle’s Over events organised by national pageant master Bruno Peek.

The day’s events will start at 6am, when 1,000 lone pipers around the country will pipe the traditional Scottish lament, Battle’s O’er. This will be piped in Rawcliffe by City of York Pipe Band Pipe Major, Laura Simpson.

Local residents will be invited to join an evening parade from Amelia House to the site of the beacon, which will be lit at 7pm.

Afterwards, bands from York Air Cadets and St Greys scout group will perform alongside City of York Pipe Band.
