I write regarding the horrendous injuries sustained by the cyclist group after hitting what can only be properly referred to as a crater on Wigginton Road (“Potholes could kill, says hurt rider”, The Press, September 1).

I regularly drive my car along that road and have said to my wife on many occasions that it was a significant hazard for cars let alone cyclists and motorcycles, then one evening last week it proved to be so.

City of York Council state their inspectors regularly inspect Wigginton Road. Well if that’s the case why haven’t they repaired it as it’s been in such a sorry state for months, just like many many other roads in York. It’s no good spraying orange paint all over the place then never doing anything about it.

Why not set up a “scouting crew” carrying proper repair materials (not just bitmap and a tamper) and equipment then get on with fixing the most dangerous ones now before someone is killed on our roads.

I am sure cost and lack of budget will be cited. However, as the gentleman who was badly injured immediately considered, what was the cost of emergency services, traffic disruption and potential successful claims for injury versus fixing only one pothole?
