HEWORTH Cricket Club are hosting a charity match on Sunday between an Emmerdale XI and a Martin Barrass XI.

The day will be held in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, as it was last year when the event raised around £2,700.

It is Barrass’ second year playing in the fundraising fixture, following his 2016 motorcycle accident in which the air ambulance were critical in getting him to Leeds General Infirmary.

A Yorkshire Air Ambulance helicopter will get proceedings underway, landing at the ground to present the ball.

Martin - who made his entrance last year on a pantomime horse - is a Yorkshire cricket fan and admirer of Geoffrey Boycott, although his speciality is with the ball. He joked: “You haven’t lived until you’ve seen my googly.”

And he has been busy rounding up his showbiz acquaintances with a cryptic invitation.

“I more or less said to people just turn up in your whites and wait for the helicopter to land,” he said.

“I’ve emailed Harry Gration but I’m still waiting for a reply,” he added. “I might just go round and knock on his door. Matthew Kelly will be there but he won’t be playing - just enjoying a few beers.”

Among the Emmerdale numbers are Chris Chittell (Eric Pollard) and Matthew Wolfenden (David Metcalfe) while Martin will have Mark Addy (Game of Thrones), Andy Dunn (Dinnerladies) and Yorkshire cricketer Jack Leaning, with all subject to filming and county playing duties.

The T20 match starts at noon. Gates open at 11am, with entry £5 per person and under-16s going free.

There will be live music, starting around 4pm, a bar, bouncy castle, tombola, vintage buses and others attractions at the event all day, which is expected to wrap up around 9pm.
