A MALTON shop has been chosen as one of 100 businesses across the country to be part of a national campaign encouraging people to shop local.

Kemps General Store, in Market Place, opened in May last year and is owned by Liz Kemp.

It has been chosen to feature in Small Business Saturday 2018, a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to “shop local” and support small businesses in their communities.

The day itself takes place on the first Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses.

This year Small Business Saturday will highlight 100 small businesses, one a day for the 100 days leading up to Small Business Saturday.

Liz, who is a former West End stage manager, worked in the corporate events industry, before deciding to open the store to offer a wide range of unusual gifts alongside books. stationery and art.

She said the nominated day for Kemps General Store in the 100 is Monday, September 17, and prior to this she would be in London for a launch event.

There will also be a Small Business Saturday event in Malton on Saturday, December 1.

“I’m thrilled that Kemps General Store has been chosen as one of the 2018 Small Business 100,” Liz said.

“I will do all I can throughout this national campaign not only to promote my own business but also all the fantastic independent business community in Malton.”

Launched in 2010, the event has grown from a grass-roots campaign encouraging consumers to ‘shop local’, into an annual event that has reached millions and raises awareness of the crucial importance of small businesses.

A spokesman said: “For the last five years, the 100 have not only received exposure on Small Business Saturday’s social media channels and in the local and national press, but also joined the Small Business Saturday team in London at receptions in both Downing Street and The Treasury Drum with the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

“We are thrilled to announce that Kemps General Store in Malton has been chosen as one of the 2018 #Smallbiz100.”
