Further to Dr Scott Marmion’s letter (I want to drive where I want, when I want, Letters, August 17) with which I agree wholeheartedly, I will state a further great concern to me. Paul Hepworth is forever telling us that increased road capacity only encourages more road journeys, but in his last letter he actually infers that decreased road capacity (ie reducing traffic flow) “may” encourage motorists to seek other forms of transport.

This is no less than bullying the car driver, and after thirty-odd years of the council following this mantra we have the present-day congestion and pollution.

Sorry Paul, but people are not going to go out and buy a push-bike just because traffic is being held up for them. And as for our public transport, well.....

York will remain gridlocked until some brave soul on the council attacks the problem at source and puts traffic flow first when tackling transport.
