CROWDS gathered to watch as lifeguards struggled to free their 4x4 from the sand in Filey as the tide crept in.

Press Camera Club member John McClure captured scenes of mild concern as the RNLI vehicle became stuck in shallow water and local lifeguards worked to free it.

Thankfully the lifeguards and members of the public were able to retrieve the vehicle in the nick of time using sandladders and manpower.

Matt Jones, the area lifeguard supervisor for Yorkshire, said RNLI staff received regular training on how to free vehicles stuck in boggy sand and said Tuesday’s incident would have acted as a training exercise.

Extreme stormy weather in March had left clay under the sand and meant some terrain was considerably more boggy.

He said the team had not been concerned.

“These things happen”, he said.
