VOLUNTEERS are taking over York's Barley Hall throughout the summer to showcase the lives of servants in the medieval period and to bring the hall to life.

The recreated medieval townhouse off Stonegate is staging living history days every Wednesday, with members of the volunteer team wearing full period costume and on hand to answer any questions.

They are demonstrating the tasks people in service would have carried out during the Middle Ages, including cleaning and household tasks and table etiquette at a medieval feast.

Helen Harris, head of volunteering at York Archaeological Trust, which operates the hall, where the wealthy Snawsell family lived in the late 15th century, said servants' lives were often-misrepresented, and it was this other side of life in the hall that the volunteers were keen to show to visitors.
