A STORE at Monks Cross remained closed today after having to shut suddenly when rainwater poured in during last Friday's thunderstorms.

The New Look shop at the shopping centre on York's outskirts was flooded after gutters were overwhelmed by exceptionally heavy rain and hail during a storm in the late afternoon.

A spokeswoman said it was aiming to reopen the store on Thursday.

Water also poured into the Ebor restaurant at York Racecourse on Friday evening, forcing the evacuation of guests and staff.

A racecourse spokesman said staff worked overnight to dry out and make good the Ebor Restaurant, and it was back in use, as normal, for guests to enjoy the racing and Boyzone on Saturday.

"A huge thank you to all involved; as well as to all the guests from Sky Bet for their understanding and patience on Friday evening," he added.

A performance of Macbeth at Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre in York also had to be cancelled on Friday evening due to extreme weather conditions, including hail and flash flooding.

Patrons could either exchange their tickets for another performance or receive a refund.

Macbeth features the famous line uttered by the Witches: “When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning and in rain.”
