A MUCH loved community centre has celebrated a £90,000 facelift.

The Tang Hall Community Centre was granted thousands of pounds to help renovate part of its facilities, which are used by hundreds of people each month.

Thanks to funding by Heworth and Hull Road Ward, Tang Hall Big Local and Feoffees renovated the community centre's toilets, helped to create a much needed changing and shower facility for disabled people, and also a new office space for staff and helpers.

The project has hugely improved the facilities for the local community, which were built almost 30 years ago, and opened in 1992.

Claire Douglas, chair of trustees for the centre, said the site had become "a much-loved venue at the centre of the Tang Hall community".

She said: "The centre provides a fantastic venue for activities for local people from Judo and Zumba to craft, family events, hugely popular community cooking and social eating and vital housing, CAY and employment advice services.

"Around 1,000 people a month come through our front doors. It’s fantastic to see so many people come together and to hear local people, young and old, talk about the friendly and welcoming atmosphere our staff, trustees, tenants and centre users have created. The funding for our recent renovations has turned a great venue into something really special for Tang Hall. This is a true example of community supporting community."

Councillor Tina Funnell said: "I am delighted to see the new toilet suite with two changing place facilities and that Heworth and Hull Road Wards were able to use some of their ward funding to enable this valuable and much needed facility to be installed. Tang Hall Community Centre goes from strength to strength as the heart of the Tang Hall community."
