YORK Racecourse has reassured racing buffs and Sir Tom Jones fans that today's race meeting and concert are going ahead as scheduled, despite the thunderstorms.

A concert by James Arthur at Scarborough Open Air Theatre was cancelled last night after thunderstorms hit the coastal town.

But York Racecourse spokesman James Brennan said today that York was a different kind of venue and the race meeting and Music Showcase concert should be unaffected.

He said said human and equine safety was the top priority but the course had staged meetings previously when there were thunderstorms about without any problem.

It is only days since it was confirmed that Sir Tom would be fit enough to perform after recent illness led him to cancel shows as recently as Wednesday.
