A HEAD teacher who shows “outstanding integrity” has been nominated for the York Community Pride Awards.

Bill Scriven is stepping down from his role at All Saints RC School this summer.

Deputy head Vic Klays has nominated Mr Scriven for the awards, which aim to celebrate the special individuals and groups whose sterling work marks them as true champions of the place where we live and work.

As part of the nomination, he said: “Mr Scriven is an individual of outstanding integrity and innate humility.

“He is a true ‘servant leader’ respected by staff and students alike. As he approaches retirement in the next couple of weeks, he leaves behind a generation of people, young and old who owe him a massive debt of gratitude. I can think of no other person who deserves this recognition more.”

Mr Scriven, 56, said he was delighted to be nominated.

He added: “It’s surreal. We have had a couple of leaving dos and people said a lot of nice things. It has been very humbling.

“You learn as much from the kids as they learn from you when you are a teacher.

“It’s the people I will miss most and all the fun things we have done together, and the challenges we have faced.

“There are some lovely, incredible students at the school.”

Mr Scriven, who lives in Barton-le-Willows, joined the school 22 years ago and has spent 15 years at the helm.

He added that he will be back at school for exam results day in August.

The Community Pride Awards aim to honour people across the city who go above and beyond for others.

The principal sponsor of the awards is York-based healthcare company Benenden Health. Nominations for the Community Pride Awards are now open and nominees must live in, or contribute to the community within the City of York Council area.
