LOCAL children have honoured a special anniversary with a new art project.

Pupils from St Mary and St Joseph RC Primary in Pocklington collaborated with local potters to produce a stunning floor mosaic to mark more than 50 years since the opening of their school on its current site.

Each child created an image of themselves on a tile, alongside the wording of the school's mission statement, with the help of Lyn and Gerry Grant from Fangfoss Pottery.

The children then laid out their tiles for the mosaic to be fired at the pottery, before it was delivered back to the school on Maxwell Road to be attached to a base.

Gerry Grant said: "It is our biggest pottery project to date and we are really pleased with it.

"The children did a very good job."

Head teacher Julie Sutherland said: "I am so proud of the children for their efforts.

"Thank you to everyone who has worked on the mosaic, which incorporates the children's tiles to represent our school this year."

The mosaic will now be placed in a garden area that has been transformed into a special space for the whole school community for the past two years.
