COUNCIL houses could be allocated in a different way under plans put forward by City of York Council.
For the past two years residents hoping to secure council housing have been able to meet with officers to get a realistic idea of their chances of getting a council home. People with a lower need are encouraged to find a home through private landlords.
A council spokesman said this has led to a reduction in applications for people who have a lower need, freeing up homes for residents who have a greater need for housing.
Cllr Helen Douglas, executive member for housing and safer communities, said: “Along with a more effective allocations policy which is relevant to the city, progress with our Local Plan, our older people’s accommodation programme and our Housing Delivery Programme, we aim to provide more homes to help meet the need in York."
The new policy will also look at the criteria for people applying for council housing.
The council is due to discuss the policy at a decision session on July 19 from 2pm.
