DISTURBING dashcam footage has emerged of a late night altercation between two men in York city centre.

The incident, which happened at the junction of Rougier Street and Micklegate at just after 2am last Sunday, involved a metal traffic sign being picked up and thrown by one man, and punches and kicks being traded between the two.

The footage was passed to The Press by a York licensed taxi driver, who did not want to be identified and who said it was taken at 2.24am on Sunday.

He said: "The police were stretched on Saturday night. Normally they sit in that area but none were present."

Hundreds of residents have complained online about the behaviour of revellers in the city centre last Saturday, and York Central MP Rachael Maskell has said some residents feel their city is being 'stolen' by anti-social behaviour.

The newspaper passed the dashcam footage to North Yorkshire Police for comment, and a force spokesman said no incident matching it had been reported to the police and officers were not aware of any complaints relating to it.

Asked whether police wanted to investigate the incident, and would like people who could identify the men involved or provide more information, to come forward, he said: "Clearly, anyone who wants to report a crime should call 101."
