COMMUTERS travelling on the train from Malton can now use the station’s new, secure cycle parking facilities.

The new, larger bicycle shelter has been installed at Malton railway station in a partnership between franchise operators TransPennine Express, North Yorkshire County Council and Ryedale District

Council.

The new racks are designed to encourage passengers to cycle to the station rather than drive, helping to reduce road congestion in the Malton and Norton area.

The new 48-space shelter provides a 25 per cent uplift compared to the previous facility and it offers cycle parking in a secure area covered by CCTV.

Charlie French, transport integration manager for TransPennine Express, said: “We are delighted to have been able to enhance and expand the cycle parking facility at Malton in partnership with North Yorkshire County Council and Ryedale District Council.

“This joint working has delivered infrastructure that enables customers to choose to cycle to the station rather than drive, knowing they can leave their bike parked securely and protected from the weather.”

The racks have been positioned on the main platform at Malton station, with easy step-free access provided.

Cllr Luke Ives, chairman of the policy and resources committee for Ryedale District Council, said: “These station improvements are part of a much bigger new investment in rail services linking Ryedale to York, Leeds and Scarborough.

“Improved and more frequent services help to connect our businesses and residents.

“Making it easier for people to access these services – with improved facilities at Malton station – is a vital part of this.”

TransPennine Express is delivering an investment of £500 million over the next two years in additional services, more seats and brand new Nova trains, the first of which will begin serving Malton from this autumn.
