THE secret is out. The cast has arrived at York Theatre Royal today to begin rehearsals for The Secret Garden, this summer's magical family show in the main house.

First staged at the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick, Jessica Swale's adaptation is being directed by Keswick associate director Liz Stevenson with a design by Lily Arnold for a run from July 27 to August 25.

Swale's past plays include Blue Stockings for Shakespeare's Globe and Nell Gwynn, winner of the 2016 Olivier Award for best new comedy, at the Apollo Theatre, London.

Her adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's children's book features puppetry and an original score by Barnaby Race, played live, to complement the 1910 story of spoilt, lonely, orphaned Mary Lennox discovering a secret garden at Misselthwaite Manor on the wild Yorkshire moorland.
