THE winners of prestigious prizes for York's best new building, best restored building and best public space will be announced at an awards ceremony on Monday.

Judges visited every one of the 28 projects entered for this year's York Design Awards in May. They will be announcing winners in several categories at the Ron Cooke Hub at the University of York on Monday.

The winner of this year's Press People's Award, voted for by readers of The Press, will also be unveiled on the evening.

By recognising the best design, the awards aim to drive up the quality of building design in York - making York an even better place to live, and ensuring that this generation leaves an architectural legacy to be proud of.

Janet Hopton, the chairman of the York Design Awards, said she was delighted with the number and quality of entries this year.

“It’s fabulous that we can reward and recognise the city’s buildings that meet a high design standard,” she said.

“Our thanks go to the judges, our sponsors and everyone who entered.

“We’re excited to be unveiling the winners next week.”

Previous award winners have included York Theatre Royal, the Chocolate Works at Terry’s, York Art Gallery, the Hiscox building and the restored Walmgate Bar.

Tickets for the event have sold out. But The Press will carry full details of the winners on Tuesday.
