IT began life in 1699 as a York country house for Thomas Barlow, master cutler from Sheffield, eventually became the ill-fated Brummels nightclub and then, from 1984, was transformed over five years into an hotel which is the last word in luxury.

Now the 29-bedroom, 60-staff Middlethorpe Hall and Spa in Bishopthorpe Road, York, with its 20 acres of manicured award-winning gardens, is maintaining those high standards, as former Prime Minister Tony Blair may have noticed when he stayed over last September.

It has AA four red-star standards, a fine dining restaurant with three AA rosettes, meeting rooms for up to 56 guests, private dining rooms for up to 60 people and a spa that boasts 125 members.

With a continuing investment programme, its gardens received the Yorkshire In Bloom silver award last year and Middlethorpe Hall clinched Hotel Of The Year in the York Tourism awards Latest investment has seen the creation of a suite with facilities for disabled guests, the creation of the Lady Mary suite and redecoration of the Duke of York suite.
