FAMILIES looking for something new to do are being invited to take on the latest high-tech treasure hunt challenge being launched in North Yorkshire.

What is it?

This is a new family-friendly Geocache Arts Trail, created by the North York Moors National Park as part of the Moor to Sea project, involving lino-cut illustrations created by six artists.

York Press:

What is geocaching?

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find what is hidden at that location.

Where is it?

At Sandsend on the North York Moors coastline.

How does it work?

The art forms the basis of the finds which families need to seek out. A lino-cut stamp at each of six spots will correspond to an image in a booklet created for the two-mile geocache, which follows a section of the Cleveland Way National Trail.

Who are the artists and what do their illustrations show?

• Farndale-based artist Sally Parkin – image of a puffin

• Bridget Wilkinson from Whitby - fish illustration.

• Wendy Tate from Scarborough - steam train image

• Michael Atkin from Scarborough – illustration of Whitby Abbey.

How do you take part?

Refer to www.northyorkmoors.org.uk/geocacheartstrail for details. You need to have access to a geocache device or download an app from geocaching.com. Before heading out onto the trail, pick up a booklet from one of the participating shops and cafés in Sandsend.

Why has this been launched?

Alison Goodwin, Moor to Sea Project Officer for the National Park, says: “Sandsend has always been a favourite for families and now with the introduction of the geocache trail there is an added draw that will help keep the youngsters occupied.

“We’ve designed the trail so that it helps people connect more with the fantastic natural surroundings as well as the attractions that define our coastline. The illustrated booklet also makes a great souvenir after a day’s exploring in Sandsend!”
