IN ANTICIPATION of the fourth series of BBC1's Poldark, lead actress Eleanor Tomlinson unveils an album of modern-day standards and traditional evergreen folk classics.

Unsurprisingly, the latter best showcase Eleanor’s crystal vocals. She Moved Through The Fair, The Wild Mountainside and The House Carpenter are perfect for all devotees who have fallen in love with Demelza Poldark’s singing.

Eleanor is joined by brother Ross Tomlinson (a wonderfully talented actor, singer and dancer, and regular leading man at the Leeds City Varieties Good Old Days) on The Spinning Wheel, another traditional number. The contemporary songs fare less well, perhaps from familiarity and certainly by comparison.

Nevertheless, Eleanor’s take on Paul Simon’s Homeward Bound, Carole King’s Tapestry and Gordon Lightfoot's If You Could Read My Mind are pristine and delicate, made more haunting by the exquisite arrangements and production of Anne Dudley (Art Of Noise, Robbie Williams, Tina Turner). However, although many have tried, none can match Bonnie Raitt’s definitive, bruised take of I Can’t Make You Love Me.
