PEOPLE in York are being asked for their thoughts on a new suicide prevention strategy for the city.

It has been drawn up to help York become a designated "Suicide Safer Community" and cut the number of people who take their own lives in the city.

It looks at things like reducing the risk of suicide in high risk groups, improving mental health, training and awareness, and better support for people who are bereaved.

The city council's Cllr Carol Runciman said: "Death by suicide is a tragic loss of life and one that, with help and support, can be prevented. So many people are deeply affected by the loss of a loved one, friend or colleague through suicide. This is why we have drafted our suicide prevention strategy with a focus on reducing the number of deaths and making York a suicide-safer city."

A lot of work has already gone on in the city, she said, but more can be done.
