THE couple behind a popular York deli have opened up about their battle with mental health problems as they prepare to sell the store after more than 12 years.

Henshelwoods Deli on Newgate Market is a favourite destination for foodies and is run by renowned chef Kirk Vincent and his wife Ali.

But the pair are now hoping to sell the site to someone just as passionate about local produce. And Ali said their decision is down to Kirk's struggle with depression and anxiety.

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, which runs until Sunday, the couple shared their story.

Kirk, who formerly worked as a head chef alongside Antonio Carluccio, was diagnosed about six years ago.

Ali said: "It is something he has lived with for decades. Most people haven't got a clue. We thought it might be a really good thing to show people that you can have a successful career and your mental health doesn't have to stop you. It's not a barrier. Having a business for yourself is fantastic, you can be your own boss but you still work hard."

Ali, 52, and Kirk, 53, moved to York from Nottingham to run the deli and fell in love with the city. Former stage manager Ali said: "York is such a fantastic city and it's small enough to care. Our oldest customer was 93 and would walk in every day for a couple of pork pies.

"One of our highlights was being on TV show A Taste of Britain with Brain Turner who came and brought a big Yorkshire hamper from us.

"It has been a tough decision to sell but this is the right time. We have always had fantastic staff, we have been very lucky."

The couple are now looking for the "next adventure" but will not close the deli until a buyer is found.

Ali said she is delighted to see the increase in the amount of Yorkshire produce on offer and added: "We hope someone will come in and take the business to the next level."

The business is on sale through Christie and Co.
