A son who financed a high living lifestyle by stealing tens of thousands of pounds from his elderly mother’s bank account has been jailed for 32 months.

Michael Anthony Stary, 60, went on cruises and paid for his children’s education as he abused the power of attorney he had for his mother Betty who was in her 90s suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, York Crown Court heard.

His sister told the court how he claimed his sibling was mentally ill and “irrelevant” to his mother, to whom he never sent birthday or Christmas cards.

Tom Storey, prosecuting, said the sister was the one who discovered his fraud and alerted the authorities.

Stary, of Calder Avenue, Nether Poppleton, pleaded guilty to fraud by abuse of power of attorney and was jailed for 32 months.

The prosecution say he stole at least £56,000, he says it was between £40,000 and £44,000.
