AN empty shop is ablaze with colour thanks to an arts charity and its Blank Canvas project.

Skippko charity has set up a pop-up shop in Goodramgate, York, with permission from the building's owner, York Conservation Trust, while it is without a tenant.

Two artists are already displaying their creations and others will follow on a rolling basis while the shop is without a tenant.

The pop-up shop is part of Blank Canvas, a project run by the charity to use empty retail space for creative purposes.

York BID and York Retail Forum are helping the charity find suitable premises in the city centre.

Textile artist Caroline Utterson said: "Normally, I'm hidden away in my studio and non-one knows I exist. It's a brilliant opportunity."

Blank Canvas York co-ordinator and contemporary artist Phil Dodsworth said: "It brings the street benefit because we are getting empty units back into use and we are bringing footfall to the street."

He said the scheme wants to include a wide range of artists and creative activity and thanked the Trust for allowing the use of the shop.

In its first weekend alone 80 to 90 people visited the shop.
