RUNNERS and supporters are rallying round to run 3.7 miles in honour of Matt Campbell who collapsed and died that distance from the finish line of the London Marathon.

Ellie Eastwood is one of a number of people taking on the Miles for Matt event in York, and intends to run a loop of the cycle track at York Sports Village from 10am on Saturday, after Heslington parkrun has finished.

The stretch will take her total mileage on the day - including the 3.1 miles from parkrun which starts at 9am - to 3.7miles.

"I think there will be lots of running club members there to support it," said Ellie, from Wilberfoss who was in London last Sunday to watch her husband Paul and fellow members from their running club in the marathon.

Matt Campbell, who was 29 and from Kendal, collapsed at the 22.5-mile mark during Sunday’s event. No cause of death has yet been announced.

"It affected us deeply, having been there," said Ellie.

"This is totally separate from parkrun, but we're suggesting that people do parkrun and then make up the extra 0.6 mile. I think there should be quite a few people who stay on after parkrun to do it."

Donations in memory of former Masterchef contestant, Matt, can be made to the Brathay Trust at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/mattcampbell-londonmarathon

The event is not associated with Heslington parkrun.
