A FIREWORKS seller who was caught with nearly 10kg of explosives in his car has been handed a curfew.

Liam Driscoll, of Barrowcliff Road in Scarborough, pleaded guilty at Scarborough Magistrates' Court to storing fireworks without a licence and failing to give age warning information.

Driscoll was caught after a trading standards officer from North Yorkshire County Council searched his car and discovered fireworks containing 9.45kg of explosives. Driscoll was handed a community order and three-month curfew by magistrates, who also ordered him to pay £235.

County councillor Andrew Lee said: “It is simply not safe for fireworks to be stored in a vehicle. I would urge anyone who is planning to sell fireworks to contact the trading standards service to arrange for an inspection of their premises and obtain a licence.”

Anyone who sees fireworks being sold from vehicles or other insecure premises such as car boot sales or via social media can report it to trading standards by calling the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06.
