COUNCILLORS and residents went bananas for delicious Fairtrade food at a breakfast event in the city centre.

To mark a fortnight of events raising awareness of Fairtrade products, people were invited to a free breakfast at the cafe at the Spurriergate Centre.

York Fairtrade Forum hosted the event and group chair Kathryn Tissiman said: “Millions of farmers and workers get ripped off despite working hard to provide the products we love. Unfair global trade has been going on for centuries. Buying fairly traded goods is something we can all do to make sure the people producing our food, clothing and crafts are being rewarded properly for what they do.

“We’re very proud that York has been a Fairtrade City for 14 years. This breakfast is a chance to thank people who have supported us over those years, and to welcome in new people who are keen to know more about fair trade."
