NEVER ones to care for acclaim, The Wombats have succeeded despite the critical sneers.
Their ardent fans will enjoy this, their fourth album of more of the same old rock. The title is certainly the best part. Written on three continents, then a crash fortnight together, the time apart hasn’t made the results any sweeter.
Lead single Lemon To A Knife Fight was inspired by a row on Mulholland Drive, LA. The glamour.
For the unfamiliar, The Wombats appear to be have staked out a space left by the Dandy Warhols, with singer Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy throwing left-field images over an expensive-sounding bed of synths and arena-pulverising effects.
Out Of My Head is the best of the current crop, Murph’s rock start woes undercut by a great bass lick. While initially enjoyable and head turning, perhaps like the marriage that inspired it, this is a record that turns out to be mostly surface sheen with little going on below the surface.
