A TRAVEL agent will work with Greenpeace to release 500 biodegradable balloons filled with messages as part of a campaign to reduce plastic pollution at sea.

York-based Quartz Travel will join other travel agents on February 24 to release the balloons outside Ask restaurant in Blake Street to help spread the ‘plastic pledge’ message.

Travel consultant Jonathan Barnett decided to act after watching the David Attenborough documentary, Blue Planet II, which showed how much plastic is dumped into the World’s oceans every day.

Greenpeace’s ‘plastics pledge’ calls on big corporations to cut down on the use of plastic and for Governments to take action and tackle the problem.

Mr Barnett has invited York school children along to the balloon release to help them learn about the important message from a young age.

The Press reported last week how York’s Kuda nightclub, in Clifford Street, was introducing biodegradable straws which disappear in six months.
