THE Government has released details of the number and nationalities of people who spent New Year’s Eve in the prisons most often used by offenders from York and North Yorkshire.
The latest prison occupancy figures released show that HMP Hull, the main male remand prison for York Crown Court and York Magistrates Court, had nearly 1,000 inmates on December 31. It houses male young offenders aged between 18 and 21 and men from 21 years old upwards. Of the 994 inmates there on New Year’s Eve, 933 were British, 59 were known to be foreign nationals and two were of unknown nationality.
Women offenders aged 18 and more are usually sent by York Crown Court, York Magistrates' Court, and most North Yorkshire courts to HMP Low Newton in County Durham. It had 342 inmates on December 31 of whom 330 were British and 12 were foreign nationals.
All defendants making their first appearance before all courts after November 15 have been obliged by law to give their nationality and date of birth. The Home Office decides whether foreign nationals should be deported at the end of their sentence.
