THE Ryedale Book Festival and the Blackthorn Press have announced a new short story competition to take place this year with prizes totalling £500.

And the top ten stories will be published by the Blackthorn Press.

The competition is now open and closes on Saturday, March 31.

Sarah Tyson, festival director said: "We are delighted to be launching this short story competition with the Blackthorn Press.

"As a festival we are committed to promoting the enjoyment of reading to all ages and introducing new and emerging writers to our audiences.

"An important part of our work is to encourage anyone to have a go at writing and entering a short story competition is a good way to start and develop."

The Blackthorn Press proprietor, Alan Avery added that the competition was not only a way to encourage new and established writers to explore the short story but was a way of discovering new writing talent that the Blackthorn Press would continue to develop and promote.

An award ceremony will take place in September. Full details and how enter at www.ryedalebookfestival.com, www.blackthornpress.com
